How To Improve Comfort While Motorcycling
As a proud motorcycle rider, you undoubtedly wish to ride your bike as often as you can and for as long as you can. One impediment to this quest, however, is comfort. Sometimes, your beloved bike simply isn’t as comfortable to ride as you might like, and you find yourself stiff and sore, suffering from aches and pains.
We’ve already provided some tips for addressing those pains in another post, but what about addressing the root of the problem? Making your motorcycle more comfortable simply involves a few aftermarket upgrades and adjustments.
Indian Motorcycle® of Orange County, located in Westminster, is proud to be your California Indian Motorcycle® dealer. To help you stay comfortable on your rides, we’ve got some tips below on improving comfort while motorcycling.
Invest in Cruise Control
One of the best features of a typical car or truck for long drives is cruise control. This function allows you to relax and let the vehicle maintain a constant speed. You can set it below the speed limit to avoid getting a ticket by accidentally allowing the speed to creep up too high.
Motorcycles don’t all have this feature, unfortunately, but if you want to add it, you can install an accessory that permits it. Otherwise, you can go shopping for touring bikes, which are much more likely to have this handy feature installed due to their use for long-distance rides.
Change Up Seating
Your motorcycle seat may not be the most comfortable thing ever, since it was probably just the cheapest material that the manufacturer could find to install. However, there are a lot of aftermarket options available in this arena to help you make your seat comfier. Inflatable cushions can help to equalize the pressure over weight-bearing areas. Other types of cushions include polymer cushions that use the same material as hospital beds. Shop around to figure out what type of seat upgrade will work best for you.
Add a Windshield
One of the most common causes of discomfort while riding is wind fatigue. This refers to the muscle pain caused by having to hold your body upright against the wind, since your motorcycle is open to the air. Over the course of a few hours, you can easily become very tired and sore from trying to keep your balance.
A motorcycle windshield is the perfect way to deflect some or all of that wind so that you don’t have to sit so rigidly. You can choose between permanent windshields or detachable models, depending on your needs. A permanent model is lower-maintenance, but a detachable model can make it easier to store or transport your bike.
Know Your Limits
Finally, it’s important to understand that you just can’t ride for four hours at a stretch and expect to dismount your bike feeling fine and dandy. Riding is an intensive activity and it will take its toll on you. That’s why you should know your body’s limits, especially if you have chronic medical conditions or acute injuries that may further fatigue you. Take breaks, make sure you’re staying fed and hydrated and stop your rides before you become completely exhausted. Give yourself time to recover between rides, too; this may mean riding a little less often, but your body will thank you for it!
