Indian Motorcycles is a New Classic
The Indian Motorcycle® tradition comes to us from the 19th century. The first of these memorable motorcycles was actually manufactured in 1897. Until the 1950s, these bikes were known for their excellent handling and lightweight agility. Racers, in particular, took these bikes on long races around the country.
Production of Indian Motorcycles® bikes went dormant for a time, but resumed when the brand was purchased by Polaris in 2011. New Indian Motorcycles® models offer great new technology and historical details. Read on to learn more.
Keep Things Simple
No matter how much experience you have as a motorcycle rider, every new bike has a different feel. Your time on a motorcycle will be much more enjoyable if all of your focus can be on the bike. Consider starting out on a parking lot or a quiet street so you can get a real feel for the center of balance, all the switches and buttons, and your hand placement.
If you've never ridden a motorcycle before, or if it's been a while, you may want to take a class before you make your final purchase. Once you own a motorcycle and notice just how much fun and how fuel-efficient your new bike is, you may be tempted to use it as your daily commuter vehicle. However, such riding can get you trapped in really tough traffic, hazardous vehicles and distracted drivers. Traffic training can keep you safe while you build confidence on your bike.
Start Slowly and Build Skills
The original models were known for their speed and were often owned by professional racers. While you can certainly build up your handling to make racing possible, it's a very good idea to go slowly when you start and build up your skills. These bikes handle incredibly well, but they do take considerable strength. Your skills will expand as you spend more time on the bike. If you find yourself feeling sore and stiff after riding, then you're doing it right!
Focus on Building Awareness
In addition to handling the bike effectively at any speed, you will need to build awareness of other vehicles. Being heard and seen is not always possible. Your ability to be aware of other vehicles is critical to your safety. As you increase your skills, you may be able to get into heavier traffic and do more commuting on your Indian Motorcycles® bike. Being aware as a motorcycle rider is an excellent defense against distracted vehicles and their operators.
