Motorcycle Service Checklist
While there are a number of motorcycle maintenance issues you can address on your own at home, you’ll likely need to visit a service department at some point. However, if you’re new to owning a motorcycle, you may not know when that point should be, nor what to expect once you make the appointment and arrive at the repair shop.
Indian Motorcycle® of Orange County in Westminster is your SoCal motorcycle dealer. Here’s our checklist for when you should seek out motorcycle service, as well as what you can expect when you visit a local service department, whether it’s at a dealership like Indian Motorcycle® of Orange County or another mechanic in the area.
1. When Should I Seek Out Motorcycle Service?
No matter how experienced you may be at fixing up your bike, it’s always good to let a professional take a look at your motorcycle on a regular basis. A mechanic is going to be more objective and will be able to spot issues that you might not notice because you ride your motorcycle so often. Also, professional service helps your bike to last longer and run at its full capacity.
2. How Often is Professional Service Necessary?
Try to have your motorcycle serviced once per year, at the very least. Doing this ensures that your bike is safe to ride and that nothing is getting worn down to the point of damaging your motorcycle. You do, however, need to stay on top of weekly and monthly maintenance tasks at home!
3. Will Getting Service Help Me Save Money?
Yes! While maintenance costs will vary widely, depending on where you go, you will end up saving yourself money in the long run. Why? Because a well-maintained bike is less likely to require pricey repairs down the road because of neglect. A motorcycle that has been carefully serviced is also going to sell better when it comes time for that.
4. What Does Professional Service Involve?
There are four types of service that your motorcycle might need, depending on the time of year and how often it’s been previously serviced. These types include interim, annual, major and full. No matter what level of service you seek, you’ll always receive some basic repairs that include exhaust inspections, suspension system tune-ups, oil and filter changes, clutches, bearings and tire checks. The more elaborate the service required, the longer it will take to complete.
- Interim: Basic inspection of parts with a road test. Good for infrequent riders.
- Annual: More intensive overall inspection that most motorcyclists should seek out.
- Major: A thorough inspection for older bikes that will address both past and current issues. Good for those who ride often.
- Full: The best option for a motorcycle that hasn’t been ridden in a while or needs really heavy tuning up.
