Your motorcycle is a powerhouse, built tough to ensure you can chase down any horizon you choose. But even the most hardy machine will eventually need some replacement parts, and your bike is no exception. We here at Indian Motorcycle® of Orange County want to make sure you get the most from your ride, so we’ve put together this guide for when you should replace certain parts of your motorcycle. If you want to know more, or you’re looking for a specific part, contact our store in Westminster, California, today!

Brake Pads

Some of the most important parts of your braking system are the brake pads. These press against the rotors to slow and stop the wheels from turning. Naturally, this causes a lot of wear and tear. You should check these pads regularly to make sure they’re thicker than 2mm (millimeters). If they’re not, or if they show signs of corrosion, they’ll need to be replaced.

Tires

Your tires take most of the brunt of a bumpy road and also naturally wear down over time. Examine them for damage or cracking in the sidewalls and check your tread to make sure it’s not shallower than 2mm, which can require immediate replacement. Even if your tires are in perfect health for their lifespan, they’ll need replacing every five years or so.

Chain, Drive Shafts, And Belts

These are some of the most durable parts of the bike and should last you between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. However, that’s only if you keep them in good condition. Oil your chain regularly, and if there’s too much slack in it, ask your mechanic if it needs to be replaced.

Battery

Most motorcycles have pretty hardy batteries, but whenever you’re getting an oil change, ask to have the battery’s electrolyte level checked to make sure. A healthy battery will still need to be changed every two years or so.

Spark Plugs

The average spark plug will need replacing every 10,000 miles or so. Check yours regularly for wide gaps, eroded center wires or ground electrode. If these conditions are present, remove the plug immediately to avoid electrical fires or other failures.

Fork Oil And Seals

The fork is the front part of the motorcycle that houses the frame for the front wheel and axle. The tubes contain fork oil and should be completely sealed. If you notice oil leakage, replace the fork seals immediately. The oil should be replaced during your motorcycle’s annual check-up.
