It’s fun and thrilling to ride your motorcycle while you’re in a group of fellow bikers. But sometimes, you may want to go on a trip without anyone else around. Perhaps you’re aiming to go on a long-distance trip to do some exploring in another state, or maybe you just want to go on a solo ride up the coast. Whatever the reason, you’ll want to make sure that you’re riding safely and being responsible. Here’s what to know about solo motorcycle riding.

Plot Your Route Beforehand

Instead of just hopping on your bike and choosing a direction, it’s a good idea to spend a little time planning your ride. Figure out what route you want to take and check out the distances between your stops so you can estimate the timing of your arrival. Try to stick to main roads, as backroads can be very hard to navigate on a bike and it’s easy to get lost.

Pack What You Need

Next, you’ll want to make sure that your bike is packed with all the tools and gear you’ll need for your ride. You should always have a first-aid kit and a motorcycle repair kit with you. You’ll also want to have some rain gear, emergency flares, your phone and charger, and food and water.

Tell a Friend Where You’re Going

Finally, it’s smart to let someone at home know of your plans and where you’re going. Check in with this person every day so that they know you’re safe. Give them a map of your route and a timeframe as to when they can expect to hear from you and when you intend to return. If you become lost or injured, your friend can let rescue crews know where you may be.
