Riding Your Touring Motorcycle Solo
You may enjoy going on group rides or rides with a passenger on your touring bike, but sometimes, it can be nice to travel on your own. The freedom and independence of a solo touring trip is unbeatable, and you can explore anything you feel like riding to along your chosen route without holding anyone else up. However, because you’re by yourself, you have to exercise more caution to ensure your own safety while you travel. Here are our solo touring tips.
Stick to a Planned Route
It’s best to plot out a course of travel in advance of your journey so that you know where you’re going and how you’re getting there. You can use a mapping app to figure out which roads are the best and which roads to avoid because of construction or congestion.
Sticking to major roads is better than trying a seldom-used back route, just in case you need some help along the way. Of course, you can visit anything you want to on your chosen route; it’s just better to have a plan so that you don’t get lost.
Share Your Itinerary
Establish a contact in your hometown who has your itinerary and check in with them on a regular basis. It may be daily or every few days, via phone or email or text, just so long as you let someone know that you’re all right and still on course. If your contact doesn’t hear from you, they can use your itinerary to help guide a rescue crew to your whereabouts.
Avoid Riding at Night
Even if your bike is equipped with bright lights and you’ve got reflective riding gear, it may be better to stop for the night before the sun sets when you’re on a long-distance trip by yourself. Night riding is much riskier and you will also need your rest in order to ride again the next day.
