Slang Terms Associated With Motorcycles
If you’re new to the world of motorcycling, you may have noticed that there’s a whole culture around bikes that you never knew about. This includes what to wear, how to ride, and also how to talk. Motorcyclists have their own jargon, just like any other group, and it’s important that you understand what your fellow riders are talking about. Here are some essential terms to know.
Bike Parts
Ape-Hangers: A term for a type of handlebar that is typically seen on a cruiser. These handlebars aren’t the most comfortable, but they do look cool: they are placed very high up so that the rider has to extend their arms fully to grab them, like an ape hanging from a tree.
Fairings: These are the metal parts that help to keep hot engine air away from the rider’s legs.
Lifestyle Slang
ATGATT: This abbreviation is short for “All the Gear, All the Time,” and it refers to the need for motorcyclists to wear protective gear to keep themselves safe. Many an underprepared motorcyclist has gotten themselves seriously injured by failing to wear padded gear that protects their bodies.
Hoon: This term is short for “hooligan,” and it’s used with disdain to talk about a rider who is careless and a show-off. These riders flout road rules and ride recklessly, endangering themselves and everyone else on the road. You never want to hear someone else call you a hoon!
